If you are planning an October break or an autumn-holiday week in Essaouira, one question comes before choosing the riad: which door do you come in through? Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU), about twenty minutes from town, or Marrakech, far better connected, followed by roughly 190 kilometres of road.
This guide gives no figures on airport crowds or how full flights are during the holidays: we do not have reliable ones. It covers what you can decide from home: which door suits your trip, how to combine the two, what the logistics cost for a family, and a time-zone trap that is new this year. One thing upfront: getme runs airport transfers in both Essaouira and Marrakech, but does not sell the drive between the two cities.
The essentials in 30 seconds
If a direct flight to ESU fits your dates, it is the simplest way in: about twenty minutes by road to town. If not, land in Marrakech and allow 2.5 to 3 hours of road, which getme does not cover. Airport transfer: €15 per vehicle, up to 6 passengers, prepaid online. Morocco stays on GMT all year now.
October this year: the clock change that catches people out
Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has dropped the permanent GMT+1 it adopted in 2018 and runs on GMT all year, with no seasonal change. Meanwhile, the UK and the EU put their clocks back on Sunday 25 October. The gap between home and Essaouira therefore shifts on 25 October, and in a way that does not match what returning visitors remember.
| Travelling from | Until Saturday 24 October | From Sunday 25 October |
|---|---|---|
| UK and Ireland | Morocco is 1 hour behind | Same time as Morocco |
| CET (France, mainland Spain, Germany, Benelux…) | Morocco is 2 hours behind | Morocco is 1 hour behind |
Flight times are not the problem: airlines always show them in the local time of each airport. The risk lies in whatever you work out yourself: the pick-up time for your return transfer, the check-out agreed with your riad, a reminder set from home time. On a getme booking, the time you enter is Moroccan local time: copy the one printed on your ticket, without converting anything.
Two ways in, two different trips
Essaouira has no railway station: the line stops at Marrakech. You arrive either through the town's own airport or through Marrakech and then by road. These are not two variants of the same journey; they are two different ways of starting a holiday.
Door 1: Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU)
getme transfer: €15 per vehicle→ The simplest way in, provided a direct flight exists for your exact dates. Check that before you lock anything else in.
Door 2: Marrakech-Menara airport (RAK), then the road
Road: bus, grand taxi or driver (not sold by getme)→ The right call if no direct flight fits your dates, or if you want Marrakech too. Treat the road as a journey in its own right, booked ahead.
A word on leaving Marrakech airport, since it is the only one of the two where we have measurements. Our drivers documented 30 rides there between 5 June and 4 July 2026: touts were present on 100% (30/30 rides), and the median opening price asked by street taxis, for rides to the medina and Gueliz, was 300 MAD. Those figures are from the summer and cover trips within Marrakech: they say nothing about the price of a ride to Essaouira, nor about autumn. They describe the forecourt you will cross if you arrive with nothing booked. In Essaouira we do not yet have field data, so we publish none.
The deciding factor: your first day
| Criterion | Via ESU | Via Marrakech |
|---|---|---|
| Road after landing | About 15 km, roughly twenty minutes | About 190 km, 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Choice of flights | Mostly seasonal routes, check them for your dates | Far better-connected airport |
| Evening landing | Book a vehicle: taxis follow the flights | A night in Marrakech avoids a night drive |
| What getme covers | Airport → your Essaouira accommodation, €15 | Airport → your Marrakech accommodation, €15; not the road to Essaouira |
| With young children | The shortest way in | 2.5 to 3 hours by road each way (vs ~20 min from ESU) |
The decision rule fits in one sentence: if a direct flight to ESU exists on your dates at a sensible price, take it. Going via Marrakech means a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way instead of about twenty minutes from ESU. On a long holiday that is easy to absorb, and it can become a two-city trip. On a short break with children tired from the flight, it costs you a day at each end.
The one scenario to avoid: landing in Marrakech late in the evening and planning to improvise the 190 kilometres. If your flight gets in late, sleep in Marrakech and take the road the next morning, on a booked bus or with a driver who has given you a firm written price.
Four scenarios, and what getme covers in each
Let us be precise about our role. A getme booking covers one city and its airport: the ride links the airport to an address inside that city's service area. An Essaouira address is refused on a Marrakech booking, and vice versa. In practice, that gives four situations.
| Scenario | What getme covers | What you still need to arrange | getme price |
|---|---|---|---|
| In and out via ESU | Essaouira airport ↔ your accommodation | Nothing | €27 round trip |
| Via RAK, with night(s) in Marrakech | Marrakech airport ↔ your Marrakech accommodation | The Marrakech ↔ Essaouira road | €15 per ride, €27 round trip |
| Via RAK, straight to Essaouira the same day | Nothing: the address must be in Marrakech | The whole airport → Essaouira trip | — |
| Arrive via ESU, leave via RAK (or the reverse) | Both airport rides, as two bookings | The road between the two cities | €15 + €15 = €30 |
The fourth scenario is the most overlooked. Flying into one airport and out of the other lets you take the best flight in each direction, for example a direct flight into ESU and a return from Marrakech after a few days in the city. You book it as two separate one-way rides, one per city. The €27 round trip assumes the same airport both ways; two cities means €30. Three euros for the freedom to pick your flights: an easy call.
Travelling as a family: the 6-passenger rule and the car-free medina
A getme transfer is priced per vehicle, not per person, and the price is the same in Essaouira and Marrakech. One vehicle carries up to 6 passengers: whether you are 2, 4 or 6, one way costs €15 and the round trip €27. From 7 to 12 passengers, the booking automatically switches to two vehicles; from 13 to 18, to three. No night, weekend or school-holiday surcharge.
| Passengers | Vehicles | One way | Round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 6 | 1 | €15 | €27 |
| 7 to 12 | 2 | €30 | €54 |
| 13 to 18 | 3 | €45 | €81 |
The second family point is the town itself. Essaouira's medina is pedestrian: no vehicle goes in, whatever transport you use. The driver drops you at one of the gates cars can reach, Bab Doukkala, Bab Sbaa or Bab Marrakech, and the last stretch is on foot. With a pushchair and a fortnight of luggage, ask your riad for its reference gate and whether someone can meet you there. If that final walk worries you, the seafront and Ghazoua are reachable by car right to the door.

The area you choose decides whether the driver drops you at your door or at a gate. Our guide compares Essaouira's three areas, arrival included.
Read the where-to-stay guideBook before you leave: the checklist
- Check direct flights to ESU for your exact dates before locking in the trip: routes are mostly seasonal and not all of them fly every day.
- Book the transfer together with your flights: getme bookings open up to 6 months ahead, so the whole autumn period is already bookable.
- Going via Marrakech? Book the road too: a Supratours or CTM bus online, or a private driver with a firm written price. getme does not sell that leg.
- Enter all times in Moroccan local time, and double-check your return if it falls after 25 October.
- Carry a way to pay that does not depend on Essaouira airport: exchange desk and ATM are not guaranteed there.
- Send your riad your arrival time and flight number, and ask for its reference gate.
- Keep some slack: a pick-up must be booked at least 6 hours ahead, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Book my transferFrequently asked questions
For an October break, is it better to fly into Essaouira or Marrakech?
If a direct flight to Essaouira airport (ESU) fits your dates, it is the simplest way in: about twenty minutes by road to town. Otherwise, Marrakech is far better connected, but Essaouira is then roughly 190 km away, a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way. With young children or a late landing that gap weighs heavily; on a two-city trip, much less so.
Can getme take me from Marrakech airport to Essaouira?
No. getme only sells airport transfers within each city: a Marrakech booking requires an address in Marrakech, and an Essaouira address is refused. For the road between the two cities, our comparison recommends the direct Supratours or CTM bus for most travellers, and a private driver with a firm written price for families with a lot of luggage.
How much is the Essaouira airport transfer for a family?
€15 one way and €27 round trip, per vehicle rather than per person, for up to 6 passengers. Beyond that, the booking automatically moves to more vehicles: 7 to 12 passengers means two (€30 one way, €54 round trip); 13 to 18 means three (€45 and €81). The price is paid online when you book, with no night, weekend or school-holiday surcharge.
I am flying into Essaouira and out of Marrakech: how do I book?
As two separate one-way rides, one per city: Essaouira airport to your accommodation (€15), then your Marrakech accommodation to Marrakech airport (€15), €30 in total. The €27 round trip assumes the same airport in both directions. The road between the two cities is yours to arrange, by bus or with a driver.
Which time should I enter on the booking, given the clock change?
Always Moroccan local time, as printed on your ticket for the airport concerned. Morocco has been on GMT all year since 20 September 2026, while the UK and the EU put their clocks back on Sunday 25 October. From the UK, Morocco goes from one hour behind to the same time; never convert anything yourself.
Our take
Our position is clear: for an autumn break centred on Essaouira, ESU is the better way in whenever a direct flight fits your dates. Twenty minutes of road against two and a half to three hours is the difference between dinner by the harbour on your first evening and spending that evening on the road. This is not a sales pitch: our transfer costs the same in Essaouira as in Marrakech.
Marrakech keeps two real advantages: a much wider choice of flights, and the option of a two-city trip, which a longer holiday makes perfectly reasonable. In that case, split the journey into three pieces and settle each one before you leave: a prepaid transfer at each airport, and the road between the cities booked with those who actually run it. The only genuinely costly mistake is landing in Marrakech at night and planning to improvise 190 kilometres.
