Marrakech airport to the city centre: the real best way to arrive

The "fixed-price" counter that inflates, the hidden fees, the forced drop-off points… Here's what really happens outside Marrakech airport — and how to arrive stress-free.

Marrakech has become a must-visit destination. But between picking up your luggage and dropping your bags at your riad, something happens that few guides describe honestly. We see this scene every single day, from the inside. Here's what really goes on — and the best way to handle it.

The bottom line

The only way to arrive with no stress, no negotiation and no surprise on price is to pre-book your transfer: the driver is already waiting, the price is fixed, you get in and you go.

The scene outside the airport

As soon as you leave the arrivals hall at Marrakech-Menara, you face a crowd: taxi reps, private transporters, touts. Everyone rushes to grab the customer. Nearby, an official counter offers "fixed" prices — but those prices change and increase depending on your drop-off zone.

The state has tried to regulate this activity, and it is a genuine effort. But on the ground, the system remains hard to enforce, because many work around it. The tired traveller has no way to tell the difference in the moment.

The "fixed-price" counter that isn't really fixed

At the counter, a price list is displayed — often starting at 150 or 200 dirhams. That's not the problem. Once the ticket is bought and you're in the car, the real stress begins: the driver starts negotiating on top.

He'll ask for a "tip", or charge extra fees — for example parking, even though it's already included in the base price. Some drivers even wait to fill the car with other passengers before leaving. And there's no real control over the quality or condition of the vehicles.

The real fees: a true story

Here's a situation we witnessed with our own eyes, and it sums everything up:

1. The "parking fee"

The driver demanded 5 € from the client for parking. Actual cost: under one euro. And it was already included in the counter price.

2. The deliberate far drop-off

He wanted to drop the clients far from their riad, on purpose, then asked for an extra payment to bring them closer to their destination.

3. The "luggage" surcharge

On arrival, he asked for more money to help with the suitcases, explaining that he was "a driver" and couldn't leave his job to carry bags.

Three improvised surcharges on a single ride, for a client who thought they'd paid a fixed price at the counter. That's exactly what turns an arrival into a bad experience.

The trap of forced drop-off points

Drop-off points are predefined. The official taxi doesn't drop you where you want, but at a fixed point — often on a big boulevard. After that, it's up to you to call the riad to come and get you (best case), walk, or take an extra small taxi.

And that small taxi is another problem: usually the meter isn't running, and the negotiation starts all over again. Someone who just landed needs to start their stay calmly — not stress over repeated negotiations while exhausted from travel.

The underestimated risk: the fake driver

Picture a client who pre-booked but doesn't recognise their driver in the crowd. They ask around: "Are you the one waiting for me?" Any driver will answer "yes, that's me, I'll take you." Once in the car, he'll ask for the address, drop the client off, and demand whatever price he likes.

Why this matters

Impersonation is real. That's exactly why verifying the driver's identity — with a sign showing the right name AND a phone number shared in advance — isn't a detail, it's real safety.

The best way: pre-book

Pre-booking is, by far, the best option. Once you land, no searching: the driver is already there. It removes the searching, the negotiation, and the need for cash — when, often, you haven't even exchanged money yet on arrival. It removes the stress, the mistakes, and the risks.

How to recognise your real driver

Your driver should hold a sign with your name or your riad's name. Take the time to check. The best system: flight tracking (the driver knows when you land), a sign with the right name, and an exchange of phone numbers between you and the driver, in case of any doubt.

What we believe

Marrakech is becoming an undeniable destination. But we've watched practices emerge that, sadly, hurt the quality of the destination. Tourists feel constantly hassled, directly and indirectly. Prices don't reflect reality: they're often heavily inflated.

Our conviction is simple: you can deliver quality service at a fair, fixed, clear price with no negotiation. The client pre-books, gets a confirmation, knows their driver's name and number, and on arrival finds someone waiting for them. The driver and the car are confirmed, to guarantee quality.

A tourist is a guest, not a cash cow.

It's that simple. And it's the only thing that drives us forward.

Frequently asked questions

What's the real price of a Marrakech airport → city centre ride?

At the official counter, expect 150 to 200 dh, but with frequent surcharges (parking, luggage, closer drop-off). A pre-booked private transfer is €13 flat for the whole vehicle (up to 6 people), with no surcharges at all.

Does the official taxi drop me at my riad?

Not always. Drop-off points are predefined, often on a big boulevard. You then have to reach your riad on foot, call the riad, or take an extra small taxi.

How can I be sure it's really my driver waiting?

Check the sign with your name or your riad's name. With Get Me!, you also have the driver's phone number in advance, and he has yours — the best way to confirm in case of doubt.

Do I need to pay cash on arrival?

With a transfer pre-booked and paid online, no: everything is settled in advance. You don't need to have exchanged money the moment you land.
