Souks & Ben Youssef — 2h
The historic, artisanal heart: you walk up the backbone of the souks to the monuments quarter — madrasa, museum, photography. The densest beauty-per-square-metre walk in the city.
The stops
- 1
Jemaa el-Fna square
≈10 minThe beating heart of Marrakech, UNESCO-listed. Quiet in the morning, the square transforms at sunset: storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, orange-juice stalls and open-air food stands. It is your central landmark — every souk entrance leads back here.
- 2
Souk Semmarine
≈25 minThe main artery of the souks, covered and lined with stalls — fabrics, babouches, lanterns, ceramics. It runs north from Jemaa el-Fna: the backbone of the trading medina.
💡 Follow the main artery due north. You will be offered a thousand detours — hold your course.
- 3
Rahba Kedima (Spice Square)
≈15 minThe old grain market, now devoted to spices, herbalists and straw hats. The café terraces overlooking it offer one of the best views over the bustle of the souks.
💡 The Spice Square. Climb to a café terrace for the view.
- 4
Ben Youssef Madrasa
≈35 minA 16th-century Quranic school and a masterpiece of Saadian art: zellige tilework, carved stucco and sculpted cedar around a central basin. One of Morocco's most beautiful monuments, in the heart of the artisans' quarter.
- 5
Marrakech Museum (Dar Menebhi)
≈20 minA 19th-century palace turned museum: Moroccan art, ceramics, coins — and above all a spectacular central patio under its immense chandelier. Right next to the Ben Youssef Madrasa.
- 6
Maison de la Photographie
≈15 minA collection of Moroccan photography from 1870 to 1960 in a restored riad. Its rooftop terrace, facing the Atlas on clear days, is worth the visit on its own.
💡 Finish on the rooftop terrace — the Atlas as a backdrop on clear days.
