Marrakech Airport to Gueliz: What It Really Costs, and How to Get There

Gueliz is one of the easiest districts to reach from the airport — and yet, by street taxi, it comes out on average a little pricier than the medina. Here are the four options, their prices, and why that paradox holds up.

Marrakech Airport to Gueliz: What It Really Costs, and How to Get There

Getting from Marrakech airport (RAK) to Gueliz costs €15 with a pre-booked private transfer (€27 round-trip), day and night. At the official Kech Cab booth, the ride is sold at a fixed fare by destination: according to Moroccan press reports (January 2024), 100 to 160 dirhams by day and 150 to 240 dirhams at night (+50%), depending on distance, excluding the desk fee. By street taxi, the lowest quoted price to Gueliz averages 336 MAD: that is the average our drivers logged on the 7 Gueliz rides in our survey (30 rides in May–June 2026, two prices noted per ride).

Gueliz, the new town, is one of the simplest districts to reach from the airport: conventional addresses, drop-off as close as a car can get, 15 to 20 minutes of driving. And yet, by street taxi, it comes out on average a little pricier than the medina. Here are the four ways to get there, what they cost, and why that paradox holds up once you look at the data.

The essentials in 30 seconds

Four options from the airport: the city bus (check the service and fare locally), the official Kech Cab booth (fixed fare by destination), a negotiated street taxi (336 MAD average lowest quoted price to Gueliz, over 7 rides) and a pre-booked private transfer (€15 fixed, day and night). Counter-intuitive: by street taxi, Gueliz averages more than the medina.

How much does an airport taxi to Gueliz really cost?

By street taxi, the lowest quoted price to Gueliz averages 336 MAD — the average our professional drivers logged on 7 Gueliz rides (May–June 2026). For reference, €1 was worth about 10.7 MAD in late June 2026 (Bank Al-Maghrib reference rate): so those 336 MAD sit well above the €15 fixed pre-booked private transfer. It is also a touch more than the average logged to the medina, at 304 MAD (over 23 rides) — we come back to this below, because it is the counter-intuitive point of this district.

A word of honesty about the extremes: across all rides (N=30, all districts), the prices quoted by street taxis span 250 to 600 MAD, with a maximum of 600 MAD logged on 2 rides. Those bounds apply to the airport in general, not specifically to Gueliz: our Gueliz sub-sample (7 rides) is too small to publish a reliable maximum. What we can state for Gueliz is its average: 336 MAD.

The paradox: easier to reach, pricier by street taxi

Gueliz is Marrakech's new town: wide avenues, conventional addresses, hotels and residences easy to find. Unlike the medina, whose alleys bar cars and force a final walk, in Gueliz a car can get you as close as possible to your address. The drive from the airport (about 6 km) takes 15 to 20 minutes in normal conditions — a simple ride, with no final walk.

You would expect Gueliz to be cheaper, then, or at least in line with the medina. Our logs say the opposite: on average, the lowest quoted price to Gueliz is 336 MAD, versus 304 MAD to the medina (averages over 7 and 23 rides respectively, May–June 2026). Our drivers' hypothesis: the business hotels and expat residences concentrated in Gueliz are perceived as a wealthier clientele. The tout adjusts the ask to the traveller's assumed profile, not to the mileage.

What this changes for you

Whether you stay in the medina or in Gueliz, the official booth sells the ride at a fixed fare by destination, and our pre-booked private transfer costs €15 fixed. Only the street price inflates based on your presumed destination. In Gueliz, being read as a business traveller can cost you more than a trip to the old city.

Petit taxi, grand taxi, private transfer: what's the difference?

In Marrakech, two kinds of taxi coexist. The petit taxi (beige, metered in theory) runs in the city and takes three passengers at most. The grand taxi — larger, often a cream sedan — takes up to six passengers, at a negotiated price with no meter. At the airport, the category matters less than the price: agree it before getting in, or buy the ride at the Kech Cab booth, which sells it at a fixed fare by destination. Beyond three passengers, only a grand taxi will do.

The pre-booked private transfer is a third route: a dedicated driver, booked and paid for in advance, waiting at the arrivals exit with your name. No queue, no negotiation, no meter — the price is locked before you even land. That is the core difference with the taxi: you do not discover the price on arrival, you know it at departure.

Five reflexes to avoid overpaying to Gueliz

  1. Choose your option BEFORE leaving the hall. Across our 30 observed rides (all districts), touts were present on 30 rides out of 30: Gueliz is no exception.
  2. At the Kech Cab booth: pay at the counter before getting in the car. The fare there is fixed by destination and the ticket is your proof. Beware of a “parking supplement” demanded afterward: it was asked for on 13 of our 30 rides.
  3. In a street taxi: agree the exact price before loading luggage into the trunk. Once the trunk is shut, you negotiate from weakness.
  4. Know the benchmarks: at the Kech Cab booth, the ride is sold at a fixed fare by destination (according to Moroccan press reports, in January 2024: 100 to 160 dirhams by day and 150 to 240 at night, depending on distance, excluding the desk fee); by street taxi, the lowest quoted price to Gueliz averages 336 MAD (N=7). With both in mind, you can place the price you are quoted.
  5. With a private transfer: check the sign bearing your name and have the driver confirm the hotel address. Any driver who cannot confirm it is not yours.

Where these figures come from

In May–June 2026, three licensed Get Me! drivers filled out an observation sheet after every airport ride, each sheet validated by a coordinator. Of the 30 documented rides, 23 involved the medina and 7 Gueliz. Each entry notes the district, the presence of touts, the two prices quoted (highest and lowest), and the wait time logged. The Gueliz-specific figure (336 MAD average lowest quoted price) rests on those 7 rides; the global statistics — quoted prices of 250 to 600 MAD, tout presence, wait time — cover all 30 rides, all districts combined.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to Gueliz?

By negotiated street taxi, the lowest quoted price to Gueliz averages 336 MAD (7 rides, May–June 2026). At the official Kech Cab booth, the ride is sold at a fixed fare by destination: according to Moroccan press reports (January 2024), 100 to 160 dirhams by day and 150 to 240 dirhams at night (+50%), depending on distance, excluding the desk fee. The pre-booked private transfer is €15 fixed for the whole vehicle, up to six passengers, the same price day and night.

Why is Gueliz more expensive than the medina by street taxi?

For the lowest quoted price, our logs show 336 MAD average to Gueliz versus 304 MAD to the medina. Yet Gueliz is easier to reach. Our drivers' hypothesis: the district's business hotels and expat residences are perceived as a wealthier clientele, and the price adjusts to the traveller's assumed profile, not to the mileage.

Can you take the bus from the airport to Gueliz?

According to LesEco (August 2026), Marrakech's bus network changed operator in December 2025 and its lines were redesigned: check the airport service and its fare locally. With luggage, the bus is awkward. For value and simplicity, the €15 fixed private transfer often stays below the street-taxi average (336 MAD), with no negotiation and no queue.

Does the €15 fixed price cover any address in Gueliz?

Yes. The €15 covers the whole vehicle, up to six passengers, to any address in Gueliz — a large hotel on Mohammed V Avenue as much as a small guesthouse on a side street. No meter, no supplement based on destination or luggage count.

Petit taxi or grand taxi to get from the airport to Gueliz?

The petit taxi takes three passengers at most; the grand taxi up to six, at a negotiated price with no meter. Whatever the category, agree the price before getting in, or buy the ride at the Kech Cab booth, which sells it at a fixed fare by destination. Beyond three passengers, you need a grand taxi.

What wait time did you log at the airport?

Across all rides (30 rides, all districts, May–June 2026), the logged wait time averaged 39.3 minutes, with a median of 40 minutes and a maximum of 130 minutes. That wait adds to the trip. A pre-booked driver, by contrast, is already waiting for you at the exit.

Our honest view, from doing this run often: to Gueliz, the hard part is never the road — it is short and simple — but the price you are quoted on exit. The data confirms it, and that is the district's whole paradox: easier to serve than the medina, yet a touch pricier by street taxi, because you are assumed to be wealthier. Three defences: know the fixed fare at the Kech Cab booth, set the price before loading luggage, or lock a price in advance. The rest is just peace of mind on arrival.
