Essaouira is known for its wind, its ramparts and its harbour. It is also a music town: over the year it hosts festivals of very different colours, from Gnaoua trance to chamber music. This guide covers the Andalousies Atlantiques, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, the Printemps Musical des Alizés and Jazz sous l'Arganier: what you will hear at each, and what is known about their dates, with sources.
We start with what is in the news, then move on to the other festivals and to the question that shapes any festival trip: how to get there. One thing upfront: getme runs the transfer between Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU) and your accommodation, but does not sell the drive from Marrakech.
The essentials in 30 seconds
Andalousies Atlantiques, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, Printemps Musical des Alizés, Jazz sous l'Arganier: always check their dates with the organisers before booking. ESU airport is about twenty minutes from town; via Marrakech, allow 2.5 to 3 hours by road. getme ESU transfer: €15 per vehicle, up to 6 passengers.
In the news: the Andalousies Atlantiques
According to Moroccan press reports (October 2026), the Andalousies Atlantiques festival runs in Essaouira from 29 to 31 October 2026, with 15 concerts and musical gatherings, notably at Dar Souiri. The festival is devoted to Judeo-Arab-Andalusian musical heritage: repertoires inherited from al-Andalus, medieval Muslim Spain, and long shared in Morocco by Muslim and Jewish musicians.
The setting is no accident: Essaouira was long home to a large Jewish community, still traced by the mellah, the medina's former Jewish quarter. The detailed programme and concert access are for the organisers to confirm: we publish nothing on either, for lack of a verified source. If you are thinking of going, the constraint is the flight more than the music: check that a direct flight to ESU fits your dates, or plan the road from Marrakech. As for the transfer, a getme booking can be made up to 6 hours before pick-up.
Which festival for which ear?
These festivals do not speak to the same audience. Before looking at dates, ask yourself what you want to hear: it is the best filter, and the table below sums it up.
| Festival | What you'll hear | For you if… |
|---|---|---|
| Andalousies Atlantiques | Judeo-Arab-Andalusian musical heritage | You love art music and the history it carries |
| Gnaoua and World Music Festival | Gnaoua music and its encounters with other traditions | You are after trance, percussion and crossover |
| Printemps Musical des Alizés | Chamber music, classical repertoire | You enjoy close listening and small ensembles |
| Jazz sous l'Arganier | Jazz | You are a jazz fan curious to hear it in Essaouira |
The rest of the calendar, festival by festival
For the other festivals, we quote the latest edition documented by the press, then what is known about the next one. The organisers always remain the reference.
Gnaoua and World Music Festival: trance and encounters
According to Moroccan press reports (June 2026), the Gnaoua and World Music Festival held its 27th edition in Essaouira from 25 to 27 June 2026; its 28th edition is announced for 24 to 26 June 2027. An announced edition is not a confirmed one: check the dates on the festival's official website before booking flights.
Gnaoua music is carried by brotherhoods whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa. It combines singing, the guembri, a lute with a bass-like sound, and qraqeb, large metal castanets, in a tradition that is both ritual and festive. The festival sets it in dialogue with musicians from other backgrounds, from jazz to world music: those encounters between maâlems, the Gnaoua masters, and guest artists are its signature.
As with the other festivals, the limiting factor is the plane: direct flights to ESU are mostly seasonal and infrequent. Our transfer can be booked up to 6 months before pick-up: depending on when you read this, the window may not yet be open for the announced edition. Book flights and accommodation first, then the transfer.
Printemps Musical des Alizés: chamber music
According to Hespress (April 2026), the 22nd Printemps Musical des Alizés, devoted to chamber music, was scheduled in Essaouira from 30 April to 3 May 2026, with twelve free concerts. We have no verified date for the next edition: watch for the organisers' announcements before building a trip around it.
The contrast with Gnaoua trance could not be sharper: small ensembles, a classical repertoire, close listening. The festival's name refers to the alizés, the trade winds that made Essaouira's reputation; our Essaouira wind guide explains when they blow hardest and what to pack, windbreaker included.
Jazz sous l'Arganier: jazz in Essaouira
According to Libération (a Moroccan daily, December 2025), the 9th Jazz sous l'Arganier festival, organised by the Essaouira-Mogador Association, was scheduled in Essaouira from 27 to 29 December 2025. We have no verified date for the next edition: check directly with the organisers before locking anything in.
Its name evokes the argan tree, emblem of the region. For a jazz fan it is one more reason to come; for a trip built around the festival, wait until the dates are confirmed before booking flights and a transfer.
How to get to Essaouira for a festival
Essaouira has no railway station: the line stops at Marrakech. You arrive either through the town's own airport or through Marrakech and then by road. For a trip built around a few concerts, that choice weighs heavily: every hour on the road comes out of your time in town.
⭐ Via Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU)
getme transfer: €15 per vehicle→ The best way in for a festival, as soon as a direct flight fits your dates.
Via Marrakech-Menara airport (RAK), then the road
Road: bus, grand taxi or driver (not sold by getme)→ The right call if no direct flight fits your festival dates, or if you want Marrakech too.
To be precise about our role: getme sells the transfer between Essaouira-Mogador airport and your accommodation in Essaouira, at €15 one way and €27 round trip, per vehicle for up to 6 passengers, fixed price paid online, the same day or night. If you go via Marrakech and stay the night there, we also run the transfer between Marrakech airport and your accommodation in that city, at the same price. What we do not sell is the Marrakech → Essaouira drive: for that road, our comparison covers the bus, the grand taxi and the private driver.
If you would rather take a taxi on arrival, here is the public reference. At Essaouira airport, the fare recommended by ONDA (Morocco's airports authority) is 150 dirhams per ride between the airport and the town; taxis are available on request (ONDA website checked in October 2026). We do not yet have field data from our drivers in Essaouira, so we put forward no other figure.
The medina is car-free: plan the last stretch
No vehicle enters Essaouira's medina. The driver drops you at one of the gates cars can reach, Bab Doukkala, Bab Sbaa or Bab Marrakech, and the last stretch is on foot. If you are staying in the medina, ask your riad for its reference gate and send your arrival time. If walking with luggage worries you, the seafront and Ghazoua are reachable by car, as close as possible to your accommodation: our where-to-stay guide compares the medina, the seafront and Ghazoua, arrival included.

Book my transferBook before you leave: the checklist
- Confirm the dates of the edition you are aiming for with the organisers or on the festival's official website, before booking anything else.
- Check direct flights to ESU for those exact dates: routes are mostly seasonal and not all of them fly every day.
- Book the transfer as soon as your flights are booked: getme bookings open up to 6 months before pick-up, and close 6 hours before.
- Going via Marrakech? Book the road between the two cities too, by bus or with a driver who gives you a firm written price: getme does not sell that leg.
- Staying in the medina: ask your riad for its reference gate and send it your arrival time.
- Carry a way to pay that does not depend on Essaouira airport: exchange desk and ATM are not guaranteed there.
- Think about the return: a round trip booked ahead saves you hunting for a vehicle the day after the last concert.
Frequently asked questions
Which music festivals take place in Essaouira?
This guide covers the Andalousies Atlantiques, devoted to Judeo-Arab-Andalusian musical heritage; the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, built around Gnaoua music and its encounters with other traditions; the Printemps Musical des Alizés, devoted to chamber music; and Jazz sous l'Arganier, for jazz. Their dates change from one edition to the next: always check them with the organisers.
For a festival, should I fly into Essaouira or Marrakech?
If a direct flight to Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU) fits your dates, it is the simplest way in: about twenty minutes by road to town. Otherwise, Marrakech is far better connected, but Essaouira is then roughly 190 km away, a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way. On a trip built around a few concerts, that gap weighs heavily.
Can getme take me from Marrakech to Essaouira?
Not one way: getme does not sell the Marrakech to Essaouira ride. In Essaouira, we handle the transfer between Essaouira-Mogador airport and your accommodation. For the road between the two cities, arrange a bus, a grand taxi or a private driver with a firm written price; our Marrakech to Essaouira comparison covers each option. For a day trip, our Essaouira excursion leaves from your Marrakech accommodation and brings you back at the end of the day.
How much is the transfer from Essaouira airport?
€15 one way and €27 round trip, per vehicle rather than per person, for up to 6 passengers. The price is fixed, paid online when you book, and the same day or night, during a festival as at any other time of year. The driver meets you at the airport exit; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
When should I book my transfer for a festival in Essaouira?
As soon as your flights are booked. A getme transfer can be booked up to 6 months before pick-up, and no later than 6 hours before. If your festival is further away than that, book flights and accommodation first, then come back once the window opens. Cancellation stays free up to 24 hours before, which leaves room if the programme shifts.
Our take
Our advice: choose your festival by ear, not by reputation. A lover of art music may get more from the Andalousies Atlantiques or the Printemps Musical des Alizés than from the Gnaoua festival, and the reverse is just as true. On dates, only one source counts: the organisers. We only repeat what the press has reported, dated and sourced.
On logistics, our position is clear: for a trip built around a few concerts, ESU is the better way in whenever a direct flight fits your dates. Twenty minutes of road against two and a half to three hours is the difference between spending your first evening in town and spending it on the road. If no flight works, go via Marrakech, but treat the road as a journey in its own right, booked ahead. And settle the airport transfer before you leave: it is the one piece of the trip that depends neither on the programme nor on the line-up.
