The essentials in 1h — around Jemaa el-Fna

Just arrived, or only an hour to spare? This short walk puts the medina in your hands: the Koutoubia as your compass, the legendary square, and a first dip into the main souk artery — with no risk of getting lost.

The stops

  1. 1

    Koutoubia

    15 min

The 12th-century minaret that towers over the city, visible from almost everywhere: THE compass of Marrakech. If you get lost, look up for the Koutoubia. The mosque itself is closed to non-Muslims, but the surrounding gardens are open to all.

💡 Spot the minaret: it is your compass for the whole stay.

  2. 2

    Jemaa el-Fna square

    30 min

The beating heart of Marrakech, UNESCO-listed. Quiet in the morning, the square transforms at sunset: storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, orange-juice stalls and open-air food stands. It is your central landmark — every souk entrance leads back here.

💡 Cross the square, fresh orange juice in hand. Come back at night for the storytellers and food stalls.

  3. 3

    Souk Semmarine

    15 min

The main artery of the souks, covered and lined with stalls — fabrics, babouches, lanterns, ceramics. It runs north from Jemaa el-Fna: the backbone of the trading medina.

💡 Walk the first 200 metres for the atmosphere, then turn back — the square stays right behind you.
