Christmas and New Year in Essaouira: ESU or via Marrakech?

Spending Christmas or New Year in Essaouira? There are two ways in: the town's own airport, ESU, or Marrakech followed by about 190 km of road. In winter, your landing time and the two festive evenings weigh on that choice. How to decide, and what to book before you fly.

By the Get Me! Team · Our method

Christmas and New Year in Essaouira: ESU or via Marrakech?

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and so does New Year's Day 2027. If you are spending the festive season in Essaouira, the first decision is not the riad but the airport: Essaouira-Mogador (ESU), about twenty minutes from town, or Marrakech, far better connected, roughly 190 kilometres away by road.

In December, three things shift the answer: it gets dark early on the road, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve fall mid-trip, and Moroccan time no longer moves from arrival to departure. School holiday dates vary, so we list none. Nor will you find figures on airport crowds or how full flights are: we have no reliable ones. One point shapes the rest: getme runs the transfer between Essaouira-Mogador airport and your accommodation in Essaouira, but does not sell the one-way Marrakech to Essaouira drive.

The essentials in 30 seconds

Over the festive season, ESU airport is about twenty minutes by road from town; via Marrakech, allow 2.5 to 3 hours, a leg getme does not sell. ESU transfer: €15 one way, €27 round trip, per vehicle for up to 6 passengers, same price on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The festive dates that matter

Four dates frame the season. None of them stops the transfers: they matter for timing your arrival, your return and, if you come via Marrakech, the road between the two cities.

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve: the transfer still runs

Landing on the evening of 24 or 31 December is not a problem if the ride is sorted before you fly. Our partner operators work without interruption on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, and the price depends on neither the date nor the hour: €15 one way, €27 round trip, per vehicle for up to 6 passengers. Your driver waits at the exit with a sign bearing your name; your flight is tracked in real time, the driver contacts you on landing and waits up to 60 minutes after actual landing, free of charge.

At ESU, booking ahead has a concrete reason: the forecourt runs to the rhythm of the flights, and with a vehicle booked there is nothing to look for on the way out, even in the evening. If you would rather take a taxi, here is the public reference. At Essaouira airport, the fare recommended by ONDA (Morocco's airports authority) is 150 dirhams per ride between the airport and the town; taxis are available on request (ONDA website checked in October 2026). We do not yet have field data from our drivers in Essaouira, so we put forward no other figure, festive evenings included. Finally, getme covers the journey between the airport and your accommodation, not getting around town: for a night out on New Year's Eve, plan another option.

What's on in town: what we know, and what we don't

On what happens in town over the holidays, we stay cautious. According to Libération (a Moroccan daily, December 2025), the 9th Jazz sous l'Arganier festival, organised by the Essaouira-Mogador Association, was scheduled in Essaouira from 27 to 29 December 2025. We have no verified date for the next edition: check with the organisers before building a trip around it. We mention no other year-end event, New Year's Eve parties included, for lack of a verified source: your accommodation is best placed to tell you what is planned.

Moroccan time: one gap, from arrival to departure

Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has run on GMT all year: it has dropped the permanent GMT+1 adopted in 2018 and no longer changes its clocks. Over the festive season, Essaouira is on the same time as London, Dublin and the Canary Islands, and one hour behind Paris and Madrid.

Canary IslandsSame time
France, mainland SpainEssaouira is 1 hour behind
Morocco on GMT since 20 September 2026; the UK and the EU on winter time until the last Sunday of March 2027.

No clocks change during the holidays: the UK and the EU stay on winter time until late March, and Morocco has no seasonal change any more. The gap you find on arrival is the one you leave with. The risk lies in times you work out yourself, such as the return pick-up or an alarm set from home: on a getme booking, enter Moroccan local time, which is the time already printed on your ticket.

ESU or Marrakech: two very different arrivals in December

Essaouira has no railway station: the line stops at Marrakech. That leaves two ways in, and in winter the gap between them widens for a simple reason: it gets dark early. A flight landing in Marrakech in the late afternoon is enough to put you on the road at night, something a landing at ESU at the same hour never does.

⭐ Landing at Essaouira-Mogador (ESU)

getme transfer: €15 per vehicle
Roughly twenty minutes by road to town
Small terminal: usually a quick exit when a single flight lands
No intercity leg to fit around a festive day
Direct flights mostly seasonal and infrequent: check there is one on your December dates
Exchange desk and ATM not guaranteed on site
Forecourt set by the arrivals: book your vehicle, especially in the evening

→ The best way in if a direct flight exists on your dates. That is the first thing to check, before you even pick the riad.

Landing at Marrakech-Menara (RAK), then the road

Road: bus, grand taxi or driver (not sold by getme)
A far better-connected airport: more departure cities and times
Opens up a two-city trip, Marrakech then Essaouira
Several ways to do the drive, from bus to private driver
About 190 km: a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way
One more leg to book, and getme does not sell it
Late-afternoon landing: a night drive, unless you sleep in Marrakech

→ The default if ESU does not fit your dates. Treat the road as a trip within the trip: booked ahead, and driven in daylight where possible.

The winter rule fits in one sentence: do not drive Marrakech to Essaouira at night by default, least of all on a festive evening straight off a flight. If your plane lands in Marrakech late in the day, sleep there and leave the next morning, by bus or with a private driver whose price is confirmed in writing. For that night, our transfer between Marrakech airport and your accommodation in the city costs the same as in Essaouira.

On the Marrakech side, we do have measurements of the airport exit: 30 rides logged by our drivers in May–June 2026, all within Marrakech. Touts were present on 100% (30/30 rides), and the lowest price quoted by street taxis had a median of 300 MAD. These figures say nothing about December or about a ride to Essaouira: they describe what was observed, in Marrakech, for travellers arriving with nothing booked.

A two-city Christmas: in through one airport, out through the other

A festive break of a week or more leaves room for both Marrakech and Essaouira, flying into one airport and out of the other. A getme booking covers a single city: the ride links its airport to an address inside its service area, so an Essaouira address is refused on a Marrakech booking, and vice versa.

Families and groups: the 6-passenger rule and the car-free medina

Festive trips sometimes mean eight or twelve people. A getme transfer is priced per vehicle, and one vehicle carries up to 6 passengers: the booking works out the number of vehicles itself, with no night, weekend or bank-holiday surcharge.

PassengersVehiclesOne wayRound trip
1 to 61€15€27
7 to 122€30€54
13 to 183€45€81
Price per vehicle, paid online when you book, unchanged over the festive season, the same in Essaouira and Marrakech.

The second constraint is specific to Essaouira: the medina is car-free. Taxi or transfer, the vehicle stops at one of the gates cars can reach, Bab Doukkala, Bab Sbaa or Bab Marrakech depending on the address, and the last stretch is on foot; if needed, the driver can walk you there or let your riad know you have arrived. With a group spread across several vehicles, agree a single meeting gate with the riad. If that final walk is a problem, the seafront and Ghazoua are reachable by car, as close as possible to your accommodation.

Before you fly: the checklist

  • Check whether a direct flight to ESU exists on your December and January dates: that single point decides the rest.
  • Book your transfers as soon as the flights are booked: getme bookings open up to 6 months before pick-up, so every festive date, January return included, is already bookable.
  • Note the deadlines: the outbound leg can no longer be edited within 24 hours of pick-up, the return (time, flight, address) stays editable up to 12 hours before, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
  • Going via Marrakech? Book the road too, by bus or with a private driver whose price is confirmed in writing, and check the operator's timetable for 25 December and 1 January.
  • Carry a way to pay that does not depend on Essaouira airport: exchange desk and ATM are not guaranteed there.
  • Send the riad your arrival time, flight number and, for a group, the number of vehicles; ask for its reference gate.

Frequently asked questions

Over Christmas or New Year, should I fly into Essaouira or Marrakech?

If a direct flight to Essaouira airport (ESU) exists on your dates, it is the simplest arrival: about twenty minutes by road. Otherwise Marrakech offers more flights, but Essaouira is then 2.5 to 3 hours away by road each way. In December it gets dark early: if you land in Marrakech late in the day, sleep there and drive on the next morning.

Does the transfer run on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve?

Yes. Our partner operators work without interruption on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, day and night. The price does not change: €15 one way and €27 round trip per vehicle, up to 6 passengers, with no night or bank-holiday surcharge. The driver tracks your flight and waits for you at the exit with a sign bearing your name.

Can getme take me from Marrakech airport to Essaouira?

Not one way: getme does not sell the Marrakech to Essaouira drive. We run the transfer between the airport and your accommodation in each of the two cities. For the road, roughly 190 km, take a bus or a private driver whose price is confirmed in writing, and check bank-holiday timetables. For a day in Essaouira only, our day trip leaves from your Marrakech accommodation.

There will be ten of us for New Year: how much is the Essaouira airport transfer?

With ten passengers, the booking automatically moves to two vehicles, since each carries up to 6: €30 one way, €54 round trip, paid online, with no night or bank-holiday surcharge. Give a single address and a single meeting point. If the group arrives on different flights, make one booking per flight.

What is the time difference with Essaouira over the festive season?

From the UK and Ireland, none: since 20 September 2026, Morocco has been on GMT all year, so Essaouira shares London's clock throughout December. From France or mainland Spain, Essaouira is one hour behind. No clocks change during your stay. On the booking, enter the Moroccan local time printed on your ticket, without converting anything.

Our take

For Christmas or New Year in Essaouira, our position is simple: check ESU first. If a direct flight exists on your dates, it spares you the one part of the journey that genuinely gets harder in winter, the road after dark, and puts you in town about twenty minutes after leaving the airport, festive evening or not. That advice earns us nothing extra: our transfer costs €15 in Essaouira as in Marrakech.

If Marrakech is the only option, make it a stop rather than a detour: a few nights in the city, a daylight drive, and a flight home from whichever airport suits you. Settle each piece before you leave, transfers included, and keep the festive evenings for something other than logistics.
