Why Ourika is Marrakech’s signature day out

Marrakech is a city of the plain — hot and mineral. Ourika is its exact opposite, within a morning’s reach. • The scenic road. You leave Marrakech due south, cross the plain, then the road hugs the Ourika river as it climbs towards the mountains. The landscape narrows, turns green, and the first peaks appear.
• The local cooperatives (optional, free stop). Along the way you can stop at a cooperative: argan oil pressed on site, local herbs and plants. You watch, you taste, you buy if you like — never any obligation.

What to pack

• Closed shoes with grip: the ground around the waterfalls is rocky and often wet.
• A light layer or windbreaker: it is cooler than in the city, especially late in the day and at altitude.
