Which Day Trip from Marrakech? The 7 Options Compared, Group and Private Prices

From Marrakech, the hard part is not finding a day trip — it is picking the right one. Mountains, desert, ocean, sky or kitchen: the seven outings in our catalogue do not take the same time, cost the same or suit the same people. A day in Essaouira runs to about 12 hours in total; a cooking class takes 3 to 4 hours without leaving the medina.

This comparison puts side by side what actually decides it: time and drive, group and private prices, and who each trip suits. Prices are from our catalogue as of 28 October 2026; durations and programmes come from our trip pages. Even if you book elsewhere, the road stays the same — and the road is what turns a half day into a full one.

Group tour or private: what changes

• Group tour: a minibus shared with other travellers, pickup at your accommodation at the minibus time, and an indicative programme (an activity may be replaced by an equivalent). Solo or as a couple, it is the cheapest option.
• Private: a vehicle and driver just for you, pickup at your accommodation at the time you choose, a guaranteed programme as announced, and free stops. The price is per vehicle: from 4 people for Ourika and Imlil, and from 6 for Ouzoud and Essaouira, private costs no more per person than the group tour.

Either way, lunch and activities are paid on site. Two guide options exist on private trips: a local mountain guide in Ourika (€20 for the group) and a local guide in Essaouira (€40 for the group).

The seven trips, one by one

Ourika Valley: the first trip to take

A day at the foot of the High Atlas: Berber villages clinging to the slopes, a women’s argan oil cooperative, a pottery workshop with a Berber family, then the walk up to the first of the Setti Fatma waterfalls. About 1h drive each way depending on traffic: it is the closest mountain trip, and the cheapest group tour.

Imlil Valley: higher, at the foot of Toubkal

Imlil is a Berber village over 1,700 m up, at the foot of Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa’s highest peak. The road runs through Asni, then climbs a valley of walnut, apple and cherry trees. On site, wander the valley at your own pace, with an optional walk up to the village of Aroumd. About 1h30 drive each way.

Agafay Desert: sunset, no dunes

The stone desert at Marrakech’s doorstep: mineral hills as far as the eye can see, but no sand — the nearest dunes are in Merzouga, about a 9-hour drive away. You go in the late afternoon for the sunset, which is included in the price. Agafay is private only; you can add a camel ride (€15/person), quad biking (from €30) and a dinner-show in a Berber tent (€40/person).

Ouzoud Waterfalls: the big water day

Morocco’s highest waterfalls: a 110 m drop in three tiers into a gorge lined with olive trees, in the Azilal province, 150 km from Marrakech. You walk down to the foot of the falls; on site, boat rides to the pool and wild Barbary macaques, which you should not feed. Allow 2h30 to 3h drive each way: it is a full day.

Essaouira: the ocean in a day

The road crosses the argan forest, with a stop at a women’s argan oil cooperative, then Essaouira is yours at your own pace: the white medina with its blue shutters and artists’ studios, the fishing port and the Skala ramparts facing the ocean. A long day: about 12h in total, including about 2h30 of driving each way.

Hot-air balloon flight: a morning in the air

A 45 to 60-minute flight over the plains and villages around Marrakech, with the Atlas as a backdrop. Welcome Moroccan tea and pastries, a flight certificate for every participant, and return transport from your accommodation included. Three formulas: Classic in a shared balloon; VIP and Royal in a private balloon at sunrise, Royal with a Moroccan breakfast served on board.

Cooking class at the riad: a half day in the medina

Not a show: a real 3 to 4-hour session in the kitchen of Riad Darino, in the medina (Dar el Bacha area), with chef Nezha. It starts at the souk to pick spices and vegetables; the menu, chosen with her the day before, brings together a tagine, a vegetable starter and a dessert. You eat what you cooked and leave with handwritten recipes.

Which trip for which traveller

• Solo: the group tour, wherever there is one. Ourika at €20 is the cheapest; Imlil, Ouzoud and Essaouira are €25/person. Agafay is private only, so the vehicle stays at €70 even for one person.
• As a couple: the group tour is still the cheapest; you pay for private for the pace, not the price. For an evening for two, Agafay at sunset; for an occasion, the VIP or Royal balloon flight, in a private balloon.
• As a family: Ourika (children from age 5 up to the first waterfall) and Agafay (from age 4 for the sunset) are the easiest. Essaouira is fine with children, bearing in mind the length of the day.
• With friends: look at private first. From 4 people for Ourika and Imlil, and from 6 for Ouzoud and Essaouira, it costs no more per person than the group tour — and you leave at the time you choose, with a guaranteed programme.
• Tight budget: Ourika on the group tour at €20/person, then Imlil, Ouzoud or Essaouira at €25/person. Budget separately for lunch and on-site activities, which are not included.
• Short on time: three outings do not take the whole day — the cooking class (3 to 4 hours), the balloon flight (in the morning, 45 to 60 minutes in the air) and Agafay (late afternoon and sunset). Among the full days, Ourika has the shortest drive: about 1h each way.

If you only do one, make it Ourika: the closest, the cheapest as a group tour, and the most complete first step beyond the medina. For a second day, choose by what you want rather than by reputation: Imlil for high mountains, Ouzoud for water, Essaouira for the ocean — knowing that the last two take the whole day, drive included. Agafay, the balloon and the cooking class do not replace a big day out: they fit around it, in the late afternoon, the morning or a half day. And as soon as there are several of you, do the maths on private: the per-vehicle price often changes the answer.
